About the Journal

Historiska och litteraturhistoriska studier (HLS) – Studies in History and the History of Literature – is the Yearbook of the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS). The first issue of HLS was published in 1925. From volume 92 (2017), HLS has been published both in print and as an open access digital publication.

HLS publishes academic articles as well as essays and overviews on history and literature with bearing on the Swedish-language culture in Finland. The articles are reviewed by two independent experts while the editorial board reviews the essays and overviews.

The reviewers cannot be members of the editorial board and their identity is not known to the authors. The submissions themselves are anonymized (“double-blind”). The review process is archived.

HLS adheres to the peer-review principles (in Finnish) set down by the Finnish Association for Scholarly Publishing. Among other criteria, the reviewers consider whether

  • the submissions add new information to the chosen field of research
  • the argumentation is supported by key research in the field
  • the article is constructed in a clear and logical manner where the analysis and the result are congruent with the aim presented in the introduction
  • the aim/questions are clearly formulated and focused
  • theory, methods and concepts are consistent, well-motivated and meaningful in relation to the aim of the study.

HLS uses the label of The Federation of Finnish Learned Societies (TSV) in its peer-reviewed articles and has pledged to follow the guidelines for the label.

The HLS editors representing history and literature respectively, decide whether to accept the submissions and whether they are to be peer-reviewed. They also request the reviews. The editors, together with SLS, make decisions on possible themes, and call for articles and essays focusing on particular subjects or persons. The editors for volume 96 (2021) are Anna Biström and Johanna Wassholm.

Submissions to the Yearbook can be sent using the link on the page Submissions. For more information, see Call for Papers. Information about schedules and instructions on abstracts, length of submissions, annotation etc. can be found in Swedish under Submissions.

The yearbook is sent to all members of the Society; it can also be found in well-appointed book stores and can be ordered via the SLS website.
